Dissolved Air Flotation Plant (DAF) is a physicochemical treatment method in which air is in close contact with a high pressure water stream, thereby dissolving the air. The pressure on the liquid is reduced by a back pressure valve, which releases micron-sized air bubbles that sweep suspended solids and oil from the contaminated stream to the surface of the air flotation unit.

Working principle

Dissolved Air Flotation Plant (DAF) is a clarification process that uses air to remove suspended matter from the surface of treated water. DAF works by dissolving air under pressure and then releasing millions of tiny air bubbles into the water at atmospheric pressure. This process allows dissolved air bubbles to attach to suspended matter in the water, allowing it to surface to be skimmed off. The process is also often assisted by adding a coagulant or flocculant to the flowing water, which promotes the aggregation of colloidal particles. Typically, DAF is used to purify wastewater from food processing plants, oil refineries, oil fracturing operations, chemical plants, and paper mills, among others. A robust DAF system is efficient and can clarify large volumes of wastewater in a single session.
