The DAF Dissolved Air Flotation Unit is an open, high-efficiency wastewater treatment system that purifies wastewater by removing suspended solids such as oil or solids by dissolving air into the wastewater under pressure and releasing the air into the wastewater in the flotation cell. Working principle
The feedwater of DAF flotation cells is usually fed with coagulants (such as ferric chloride or aluminium sulfate) to coagulate the colloidal particles and/or flocculants into larger clusters.
A portion of the clarified effluent water leaving the DAF tank is pumped into a small pressure vessel (called an air drum or saturator) into which compressed air is also introduced. This process saturates the pressurized outflow of water with air under pressure (2.5-4kg/cm2).
The air-saturated effluent water circulates to the front of the float tank and flows through the pressure reducing valve as it enters the front of the float tank. This immediately causes the circulating effluent to be supersaturated with air, forming millions of tiny air bubbles (Φ5-20μm).
These bubbles adhere to and form within the solids or chemical flocculants entering the vessel, causing them to float to the surface, where they are trapped and subsequently removed by the skimmer.
